Zoo Knoxville’s Conservation Efforts
Fun on the outside, serious about animals on the inside. Zoo Knoxville works in collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to save animals from extinction. The work being done right here in Knoxville, Tennessee, is making a difference for threatened species globally.
Zoo Knoxville is actively involved in 83 Species Survival Plans to ensure the future of vulnerable animals both in the wild and in human care. Just one example is the critically endangered radiated tortoise. Found only in Madagascar, their wild populations are plummeting because of illegal poaching for the pet trade, where a single tortoise can fetch a price of hundreds to thousands of dollars. Zoo Knoxville is a founding member of the Radiated Tortoise SAFE program, which in partnership with the Turtle Survival Alliance and the Hogle Zoo in Utah, has developed a Madagascar-based program that is rehabilitating and caring for animals that have been confiscated. To date, they’re giving sanctuary to nearly 20,000 confiscated tortoises and devising plans to reintroduce them to the wild. In addition, Zoo Knoxville is developing an animal husbandry program that will further help conservation efforts.
Zoo Knoxville is committed to saving wildlife and wild places and empowering our visitors to be a part of the largest conservation movement on the planet. Visit zooknoxville.org to learn how you can help support the zoo’s mission.
